City of Lights

Accra architecture

Accra is the capital of Ghana, the first sub-Saharan African country to gain independence from colonial rule in 1957 under Kwame Nkrumah. The city's Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum, a striking glass pyramid, marks the spot where independence was declared. Ghana's reputation for political stability, warm hospitality, and vibrant Afrobeats music scene has made Accra a rising destination — particularly after the 'Year of Return' in 2019, which invited members of the African diaspora to visit and reconnect with their heritage.

  • Fly intoKotoka International Airport (ACC)

Kotoka International Airport is named after Lieutenant General Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka, a Ghanaian military officer. The Terminal 3 building, opened in 2018, significantly modernized the airport's international capacity and set a new standard for West African aviation infrastructure. The airport is located just 5km from the city center, making it one of the most conveniently situated international airports in West Africa.

  • LanguageEnglish & Twi

English is Ghana's official language and is used in schools, government, and media. Twi (Akan) is the most widely spoken indigenous language and is understood by the majority of the population. In daily life in Accra, you will hear a blend of English, Twi, and Ghanaian Pidgin. The characteristic Ghanaian English accent and the warm, respectful greeting culture — removing hats, using both hands — are hallmarks of Accra's hospitality.

  • Getting aroundTrotros & Metro Mass

Accra's primary mode of public transport is the trotro — shared minibuses that follow set routes announced by a mate (conductor) calling out destinations at each stop. Metro Mass Transit buses serve longer routes across the city. The city is expanding rapidly, and a Bus Rapid Transit system is under development. Ride-hailing apps like Uber and Bolt are widely used by visitors for reliable, metered transport.
