The Daughter of the Baltic
Helsinki architecture
Helsinki was built on a peninsula surrounded by an archipelago of over 300 islands, giving the city an almost aquatic character in summer. Finland has more saunas per capita than any country in the world — roughly one sauna for every two people — and the tradition is deeply embedded in Finnish culture and social life. The city's design heritage is legendary: Helsinki was chosen as the World Design Capital in 2012, and Finnish design icons like Marimekko, Iittala, and Aalto furniture are exhibited in museums here.

- Fly intoHelsinki-Vantaa Airport (HEL)
Helsinki-Vantaa Airport is Finnair's home hub and serves as a key connection point between Europe and Asia, offering some of the shortest flying distances between Europe and Japanese or Chinese cities via the polar route. The airport is consistently rated among Europe's best for punctuality and passenger comfort. A direct rail link from the airport to Helsinki Central Station opened in 2015, taking about 30 minutes.

- LanguageFinnish & Swedish
Finland has two official languages: Finnish and Swedish. Finnish is entirely unrelated to the other Scandinavian languages — it belongs to the Finno-Ugric family, related to Estonian and distantly to Hungarian. Swedish is the mother tongue of about 5% of the population, mainly in coastal areas, and all public signage is bilingual. English proficiency in Finland is among the highest in the world — Helsinki residents speak fluent English without hesitation.
- Getting aroundMetro & Trams
Helsinki operates a compact but highly efficient transit system under the HSL authority, integrating the metro, trams, buses, commuter rail, and ferries to the islands. The historic orange trams that run through the city center have been operating since 1891 and remain a charming way to navigate. The city is also extremely walkable and bikeable in summer, with a city bike network available from April to November. In winter, many Helsinkians cross-country ski in the city's extensive parklands.
