    King Fahad National Library

King Fahd Rd, Al Olaya, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia's national library is a building wrapped around another building. Rather than demolish the original 1980s library, with its cross-shaped plan and small central dome, the Dortmund firm Gerber Architekten enclosed it inside a new five-storey square block measuring 140 metres on each side. The new facade is shaded by white textile sails that cut the desert glare while recalling Bedouin tents and the lightweight tensile structures Frei Otto pioneered in the Kingdom. It stands on King Fahd Road, one of Riyadh's main avenues, right beside the Al Faisaliah tower.
