3 traditions to check off

Stamped! keeps these as a checklist, so you can tick each one off on the visit.

  • Walk through the Columns

Each August, new students sprint through the Columns toward Jesse Hall, and graduating seniors walk back the other way in May. Visitors can walk the same route across Francis Quadrangle.

  • David R. Francis's nose

By legend, rubbing the nose on the bronze relief of David R. Francis near the northeast entrance of Jesse Hall brings an A on the next exam. Francis is credited with keeping the university in Columbia after the 1892 fire.

  • Thomas Jefferson's tombstone

The original marker from Thomas Jefferson's grave at Monticello stands on the east side of Francis Quadrangle. His heirs gave it to Mizzou in 1883 as the first university founded in the Louisiana Purchase territory.
