3 traditions to check off

Stamped! keeps these as a checklist, so you can tick each one off on the visit.

  • Rub the Bruin Bear's Paw

Students rub the paw of the Bruin Bear statue in Bruin Plaza for good luck during finals week. Visitors stop for a photo and a paw rub.

  • Skip the Sixth Step

Legend says anyone who steps on the sixth step of Janss Steps will have bad luck and graduate a quarter late. Many students hop over it on the way up.

  • Inverted Fountain

New students are "Bruintized" at this 1968 fountain, whose water drops into a well instead of spraying up. Tradition says they then avoid touching the water until graduation, so visitors look but do not touch.
